2009 Baja 500 Race Summary
Great job Team Caveman, thanks for all your help this last week, that must of been what gave Sarah that 4 minute advantage
It was interesting race this year, I rode the first 68 miles in one of the most heated battles of my life with the racers in class 20, it was crazy like a freight train of bikes battling back and forth for positions.
I handed off the bike to Talya who took the bike to Sarah at Honda pit 2, Sarah took it over the summit the hardest section of the race, she started gaining back time on our competors, she handed off the bike to me again at Boreggo I took it over to hwy 1. Just out of Boreggo along the Hwy the Kritsch's and Rex got to witness me wipe out in a set of whoops, yes it was very embarrassing for me, everything was ok.
Around mile 290 I came accross a head on accident between a racer and a spectator vehicle, it was a horrible sight no one was attending to him, he was just laid out on the ground with no movement at all, the medical team had not arrived yet and my prayors go out to the young man we listened to the radio and much to my reliefe he was getting airlifted out.
I handed the bike off to Talya at mile 296, we waited for her to come thru Santo Tomos she arrived around 15 minutes after the time we expected and rode on to Ojos to hand the bike off to Sarah, we headed for the finish.
At the finish line we waited the time I expected to see Sarah passed than every one in our class arrived like a freight train again. Finally someone that was behind us arrived, so we asked him if he had seen our team, he said yes that Talya had fallen in a ditch and was stuck but she was ok and going to work on getting out.
We all started to get nervous as word had it Robbie Gordon was on his way and poor Sarah was going to be mixed up with the trucks, than around the corner Sarah came yes she made it before the trucks and we finished the race even though we had problems along the way everyone did a great job on getting it to the finish line.
Thanks to Eric, Tracy, Ryan, Larry and Dan for all there help as well and a huge congrats to Dan for his Solo ride, he looks great! like he is ready for another 500 miles.
